Dear Ms. Molina,

Your destruction of the passionate work of more than 300 artists at the Los Angeles River is a disgrace. Not only was the work legal and sanctioned, but beautiful as well. These artists donated their time and the cost of their supplies to help make the grimy, desolate LA River vibrant and full of life. I think the public deserves an answer on why you would complain about such an amazing display of solidarity and creativity in your community... especially since the other members of your council pre-approved the project.

Perhaps these artists should take legal action against you for the incredible damage you caused. Even if you only look at the amount of money they spent on supplies and the labor they put into it, you would owe these artists more than a million dollars. Think about it.

Please step back into reality and remember the constituents you serve, perhaps saving your personal opinions on what constitutes art for the choices you make at home. Your actions in calling for the buffing of these beautiful works of art are despicable. "No comment" isn't good enough. Your community wants an answer, and we will continue to contact you until you stand up and take responsibility for your actions. We are outraged.

Pimp C, real name Chad Butler -- and one half of the rap duo UGK, was found dead in a hotel room this morning. He was 33.

L.A. County Fire responded to a 911 call at the Mondrian Hotel, located on trendy Sunset Strip in Hollywood. They arrived to his sixth floor hotel room to find him dead in bed.

UGK is best known for appearing on the Jay-Z track "Big Pimpin'" in 2000, and more recently with Outkast on the song "International Player's Anthem (I Choose You)." Pimp C had just performed with fellow rapper Too Short at the "House of Blues" in L.A. on Saturday night.
UPDATE: Jive Records has issued the following statement regarding Pimp C's death:

"It is with great sadness that Jive Records announces the passing of Chad "Pimp C" Butler, a member of the celebrated rap duo UGK (Underground Kingz). Jive Records' President and CEO Barry Weiss states: "We mourn the unexpected loss of Chad. He was truly a thoughtful and kind-hearted person. He will be remembered for his talent and profound influence as a pioneer in bringing southern rap to the forefront. He will be missed and our prayers remain with his family and Bun B. I've known Chad since he was 18, and we loved him dearly and he was a cherished member of the Jive family."

Born in Port Arthur, Texas, Butler's father was a trumpet player who played professionally with Solomon Burke. Outside of his father, the 33-year old rapper's influences varied, ranging from Bobby Bland, Jimmy McGriff, the 1960's Motown artists to Run DMC. Butler met his inseparable partner Bernard "Bun B" Freeman in high school where they formed UGK. In 1992, the duo signed to Jive Records and went on release a total of eight albums for the label. They earned their highest achievement earlier this year when their most recent album, UGK (Underground Kingz), debuted in the number one position on the album pop chart. According to the New York Times, UGK "helped inspire a generation of Southern hip-hop stars, from OutKast to Lil Wayne."

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Reuters) - Daredevil Evel Knievel, who dodged death in spectacular motorcycle leaps and crashes in a life full of showmanship, died on Friday at age 69, according to his lawyer and a message on his Web site.
"I just spoke with him last night. He seemed to be in good spirits," said Knievel's lawyer, Richard Fee, adding he died in the Tampa Bay area of Florida where he recently made his home.

Knievel had been ill for some time, suffering from a lung disease.
He recently gave what he said "may be the last interview I ever do" to the December issue of Maxim magazine and battled rap singer Kanye West for infringing his trademark in the "Touch the Sky" video, in which West appears as "Evel Kanyevel" and wears a white jumpsuit like the one Knievel made famous.
The two reached a settlement on Tuesday.
In his heyday, the king of all daredevils dressed like a superhero in a red, white and blue leather jumpsuit with a cape and cane, his hair sculpted back in a tall pompadour.
Knievel's greatest stunt turned out to be a failure when on September 8, 1974, he tried to ride a rocket-powered motorcycle across the Snake River Canyon in Idaho.
With a nationwide pay-per-view television audience watching, the parachute deployed when his Skycycle X-2 was only about two-thirds across, sending the cycle into the canyon wall. It landed partly in the river but Knievel walked away with minor injuries.
In a typical stunt, Knievel would race up a ramp and soar over a dozen or more buses or cars parked side by side.
"Anybody can jump a motorcycle," he once told Esquire magazine. "The trouble begins when you try to land it."
Knievel broke more than 40 bones, including his back seven times. His final years were plagued by pain resulting from his numerous accidents, as well as pulmonary fibrosis, a scarring of the lungs.
"God never made a tougher son of a bitch than me," Knievel told USA Today in an interview published in January 2007.
The reporter described Knievel, who was 68 at the time, as feeble and reliant on an oxygen tank and an implanted drug pump to relieve his pain.
His famous nickname came courtesy of a jailer who dubbed him "Evil Knievel" after run-ins with the police as a youth. To avoid being seen as a bad guy, Knievel later changed the spelling to "Evel" as his daredevil career took off.

GENOA, ITALY--On Friday, 20 July, an Italian police officer shot a protester in the head at point blank range with a revolver.
According to Radio EMC Italia, protesters had been chasing a police jeep down a street. When the jeep stopped, protesters caught up and began "attacking" it, one eye-witness has reported. The witness saw no fire arms or other deadly weapons in the hands of the protesters.
The police officer driving the jeep leaned out his door and fired "three or four shots" at Carlo Guliani, age 23, of Genoa, who immediately fell to the ground. A one-foot stream of blood came out of his head and began puddling on the ground.
The police officer then backed the jeep over his body, shifted gears, and drove over it a second time before leaving the scene.
According to the same eye witness, other protesters immediately surged forward to check the body. The first to arrive checked the pulse and yelled for a medic, and then was hit in the head with a tear gas canister fired by the police. He retreated, and the police surged forward and separated the body from the protesters.
Protesters are expecting the police to justify this brutal murder as "self-defense." An eye-witness to the shooting is already countering this claim, saying that the officer was safe in his jeep and could have driven away at any time.
Additionally, this incident took place outside the special security zone set up by Italian law enforcement. The G8 summit is taking place inside the Red Zone, and non-attendees are not allowed there. Around this is the Yellow Zone, where only city residents are allowed. This murder occured even further out than that, in the Green Zone, where people are supposedly allowed to protest.
The Independent Media Center in Italy has reported that another protester has been killed by police as well and that many others have been wounded

It seems an uncouth attack on the artists who participate in the art of graffiti [which has been happening since man figured out that moist clay dirt made bold markings on light colored walls in the fire] by bringing peoples homes into the picture. Perhaps you should show a statistic on how many peoples homes actually are vandalized by graffiti artists instead of how many americans are actually home owners. Your 'article' only appeals to those simple minded simple natured people who really dont know much about what it is that they are reading, you've only told them what they should think. Fines imposed on homeowners for snow on the sidewalk is one thing, but to make it a poor analogy with graffiti removal is appaling.

The thing about true graffiti artists is they follow a code of conduct, a set of rules that should not be broken under any circumstances. No Homes. No Churches. No Schools. Usually the only people who violate this are gang members.

However, I do agree with what you have to say if it is kept within the context of Gang members marking their territory...in which case yes, something needs to be done to monitor and eradicate the activities of such individuals, and such investigation could also lead to the decline of many other forms of gang activity including drug making/trafficking/dealing, violent crimes, rapes and murders. Or it could just make them smarter. City governments should pay for the removal of such graffiti since they are so concerned with it.

Regardless, what needs to be understood here is that you have set up such a broad generalization of what 'graffiti' is, when in actuality you are only speaking of a few select individuals disrespectful enough to actually vandalize peoples homes. Next time, do some actual research into what graffiti really is and who participates in the art as opposed to stereotyping individuals with real artistic talent into the catagory of hooligan vandal.

For every budding Keith Haring though, there are probably 10,000 punks who are either gangbangers, wannabes, or just want to deface something for the sake of defacing it. Most graffiti is simple, ugly, 'look what I did!' tagging without any imagination or technique whatsoever.

If someone asks a property owner if they can execute a mural on a otherwise ugly blank wall of their building; then fine by me. Otherwise, they can spend the summer roasting alive while picking up trash along the highways wearing an orange jumpsuit for all I care.

Your secondary anonymous comment may be yourself or someone else. Vandalism is destruction of property, graffiti is writing your name or a picture on a wall (and usually that wall is in a public space, not private homes). City life can be pretty boring - why not go after all the ugly advertising instead?
Or save your council's money and pay for some more rubbish bins or buses that arrive on time?
Street art is not vandalism, putting someone in jail for daring to say something is.
